In part due to my graduation from my Bachelor of Music Program at Boston University in 1963, and also because I am an educator (Brown University from 1970 to 1975) as well as having observed the liberal arts program on the ground (Brown University), I believe that educational programs should incorporate studying art and other disciplines. That's not so surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967 and PhD from UCLA)! The ethnomusicology course I began here in UC Berkeley (from 1975-1976) is a good fit in a department of music in the College of Letters and Science. It's fun to pursue diverse interests. It is also fun to see the whole overall picture. It's an absolute pleasure teaching graduate as well as undergraduate students. I am an published author of three books: Music in India: the Classical Traditions; Thinking Musically and Music in Japan, Experiencing Cultural Expression and Music. There are times when I'm primarily a professor, and also other times in where I am involved in administrative tasks (such as being Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Director of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and Chair of Deans of College of Letters and Science between 1994 and 1998).
